Okay, as a web designer it goes beyond my comprehension but sometimes ugly website actually work. If you take a look at eBay, it’s not a very pretty site, or, the most obvious like Amazon. They are not “pretty” sites. In fact, I would say they are too busy and unfocused but they are functional which is the most important component of any website. Make it easy for your customers to find what they want, buy it or call you and move on.

Sometimes it’s not the design but the trust you evoke. Some ugly website scream, “Hey, I am a small business and couldn’t afford a big marketing firm. So I built it myself.” But if you are conveying that you are trustworthy by including phone numbers, addresses, your policies and make sure you site is easy to use, you can be sure that your customers will appreciate it and respond with loyalty.

Google understood this. It can barely call it self a web designed site as it is primarily made up of a logo, search box, and some small text. That’s it. It’s fast, easy, simple.

Lesson learned, don’t assume your website has to be filled with high-end graphics and animation. Just be sure it conveys your business in the best possible light and that your customers can quickly get what they need.

Whew! We did it! We finally redesigned our beleaguered website. It was necessary and past due. After several mockups and design changes, focus and direction changes, and framework, the website went live on Friday.

But it’s not complete as you’ll notice. We are continually adding content and images to our portfolio.

It is semantically coded with search engines in mind but also designed for they handicapped and visually impaired. Other benefits include more focused web pages and faster download. Not to mention that it is cleaner and less busy. And, yes, the icons are handmade by Christina.

We are excited about this new website and hope you are pleased with the change. Let us know what you think!

How important, really, is a good web design. I am getting more and more confused as to what constitutes good web design. I am often requested by clients to design “clean” and “simple” web design; which is quite understandable. We all want to make sure that our message gets across without getting lost in the design. But what I am noticing is a trend toward, hmmm, how shall I say it? Well, the word is boring.

Plain banners, white backgrounds, pale colors, no graphics (just photos), are what they are asking I create. Instead of designing for a target market (their customers); designs are based on the site owner’s personal tastes and in some way fear. Example

A site owner needs to focus on what the customer is expecting or wanting to find when they come to your site. Within 1-2 seconds a site needs to grab a user’s attention, the next second or two determines whether they stay or not. You need to make sure your design conveys exactly what you do and why you should be trusted. Example

A good web design passes this test. You should instantly be able to understand the website’s purpose then know what to do next, for example… call, shop, sign-up.

That’s not to say you need to stray from clean, simple designs but don’t make is so simple that it is generic. Be unique and make sure your site portrays your company’s purpose and specialty. There are millions of websites out there, make sure yours is one that stands out while getting your message across effectively.
