How important, really, is a good web design. I am getting more and more confused as to what constitutes good web design. I am often requested by clients to design “clean” and “simple” web design; which is quite understandable. We all want to make sure that our message gets across without getting lost in the design. But what I am noticing is a trend toward, hmmm, how shall I say it? Well, the word is boring.
Plain banners, white backgrounds, pale colors, no graphics (just photos), are what they are asking I create. Instead of designing for a target market (their customers); designs are based on the site owner’s personal tastes and in some way fear.
Example
A site owner needs to focus on what the customer is expecting or wanting to find when they come to your site. Within 1-2 seconds a site needs to grab a user’s attention, the next second or two determines whether they stay or not. You need to make sure your design conveys exactly what you do and why you should be trusted.
Example
A good web design passes this test. You should instantly be able to understand the website’s purpose then know what to do next, for example… call, shop, sign-up.
That’s not to say you need to stray from clean, simple designs but don’t make is so simple that it is generic. Be unique and make sure your site portrays your company’s purpose and specialty. There are millions of websites out there, make sure yours is one that stands out while getting your message across effectively.
